The next historical evidence we have in our archives are programmes for the Championship Galas of 1930 and 1931.

As with earlier championship galas, the rules still stipulated the wearing of regulation costumes with drawers underneath. Though the reason for this is unclear the possible explanation is that as the costumes were made of wool they tended to stretch when wet.

It is stated that the School Championship races featured competitors from schools in Bridge Street, Peel Street, Victoria Road, Cross Hall and Churwell. Many Morley residents will be familiar with these names.

The programmes list the total number of events in these galas as being 18. Included in these were the popular Water Polo match which took place at the end of the swimming events. Another common feature of these early Championship Galas was the Comic Event.
During this period the Swimming Galas were usually arranged to coincide with the local fair and they were well attended by the local community.
